There’s no surprise here that I’m a huge fan of Whatnot. The part I wasn’t expecting was the addicting nature of it all, I mean, do I really need THAT many sweatshirts living in a warm state, cmon! The one negative with social selling , and Whatnot is definitely not immune to is counterfeit products. I mean some auctions are just running for a few seconds, how are you really going to know if that Louis Vuitton is real until you’re holding it in your hands (and sometimes, that’s not even enough). I’m going to share with you where I ordered multiple pairs of Oakley sunglasses that turned out to be fake . Whatnot buyer protection really came through.
Whatnot Did a Great Job Protecting Me With Their Buyer Protection
Before I dive too deep into this story, you need to know that Whatnot refunded me every single penny from the purchases I made through a fraud seller, including shipping fees. I created a support ticket, they asked a couple questions including me to email a picture of the item. Their reply, which was around 24 hours later, included that they would be refunding me for all orders.
The part that made the experience really cool, making social selling amazing, is the community from the buyers. There were multiple buyers in this show that purchased sunglasses, and it was all fraud for them too. I posted a negative comment with one star, then suddenly other buyers were messaging me saying they went through the same thing. I described how Whatnot was a huge help and was able to get a refund. There was something really nice about to help a fellow buyer who got scammed out of a real product, to not lose any money.
After a few business days, the charge on credit card was reversed and my funds came right back. So the lesson learned here is not only would I never deal with that seller again (he’s banned, but could always pop up again), it’s nice knowing that Whatnot truly stands behind their buyer protection.
What to Look For When Buying from a Seller
Common sense tends to still win here (new seller selling an expensive item right away, little to no reviews on a product that could easily be counterfeit). Looking at a seller’s reviews still wins. Whatnot sellers can have the highest rating of 5.0. If a Whatnot seller is anything below a 4.8, I would have my guard up. I would look through their reviews and message the negative commenters directly. I think this is such a great feature of Whatnot, being able to get more details directly from the source.
